Show Notes

We’ve hit the big 4-0! In this 40th episode of Sweet Lobs, we slow down just a bit—not to take our foot off the gas, but to reflect and refine. As we wrap up our first year, we revisit some of the key conversations that have shaped our journey: what’s in your bag, tournament prep strategies, the evolution of coaching in the sport, and what makes a player truly ready to compete.

But this isn’t just a recap. We zoom in on how those early insights still apply—and where we’ve grown since. With some fresh takes and honest reflection, we’re laying the foundation for a killer Year-In-Review in next week’s Episode 41.

Whether you’ve been with us since the beginning or just jumped in, this is the episode to hear how it all connects. Come celebrate a full year of pickleball, learning, and plenty of laughs.

[00:00:00] Speaker A: Welcome back, my love. [00:00:01] Speaker B: Thank you. It's great to be back. [00:00:03] Speaker A: It is. And we're doing this earlier than expected this week. [00:00:06] Speaker B: Yay. [00:00:07] Speaker A: Which gives me an extra 24 hours to get it done and almost. Only 24 hours to get it done. [00:00:13] Speaker B: Can I say it? [00:00:14] Speaker A: Happy Cinco de Mayo. [00:00:16] Speaker B: I was gonna say happy anniversary. [00:00:18] Speaker A: Oh, well, I. We're. We're one day short. [00:00:26] Speaker B: We are. Well, yes, we're one day short. [00:00:29] Speaker A: And on the last pod, we teased the best of the best. We've got some good ideas coming in from you guys. Thank you for those. We need some more. [00:00:37] Speaker B: We definitely need some more. [00:00:39] Speaker A: Well, I guess we don't need any more. We. We have enough, but we'd love more. And we decided that since we're still rookies for another day, then we can't. We're. We're novices after that. I think whatever the next stage is after rookie, we can probably get away with changing our mind. So this episode, there's always room to change our mind. Yeah. This episode, while almost out of year, is not at a year yet. So we decided we would not give you the annual or the. Or the first year anniversary edition until next week on Wednesday. [00:01:11] Speaker B: That is correct. [00:01:12] Speaker A: So today we have to do a different topic. [00:01:15] Speaker B: Yep. [00:01:17] Speaker A: All right. The question is, are we. The question is, are we capable of delivering at a moment's notice? Since you called me on the way over here like, hey, you want to do it today instead of tomorrow? [00:01:35] Speaker B: I changed your plans. [00:01:36] Speaker A: Yeah. Like always. I didn't tell you what we were going to cover this week, and rarely do. I do not like to do that. And candidly, I didn't know what we were going to cover this week because I thought it was gonna be tomorrow, and I was gonna work on that later tonight, but I have some thoughts. Oh, you know, we are not a podcast for the pros. [00:01:57] Speaker B: No, we're the. We're for the players. [00:01:59] Speaker A: We're the people's podcast. [00:02:01] Speaker B: That's right. [00:02:01] Speaker A: We should call ourselves that. From now on, the People's Podcast by Kevin and Sky Huff for the players. [00:02:08] Speaker B: We're all about the players. [00:02:10] Speaker A: We are. And not only are we not for the pros, we're not about usually talking about the pros. [00:02:16] Speaker B: We don't spend a lot of time talking about the pros because there are. [00:02:19] Speaker A: Other podcasts out there, like almost every other one of them that will give. [00:02:23] Speaker B: You updates on what's going on. [00:02:25] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:02:26] Speaker B: On the pros, you don't want the. [00:02:27] Speaker A: Juicy Juice, you know, go listen to somebody else. [00:02:30] Speaker B: We Also don't like drama because we try to keep our lives. Drama free. So if you talk about. If you talk about a celebrity, sometimes that brings on drama. [00:02:43] Speaker A: Everyone wants to know. [00:02:44] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:02:45] Speaker A: What's alw doing with her new partner? Oh, she broke up with her other partner. What's so and so doing? What's. Why does Zayn bounce around for partner to partner. Whatever. Like, folks, we don't know business and we don't give a raspberry. [00:02:56] Speaker B: It's. And it's not about you. We want to talk about you. [00:03:00] Speaker A: Exactly. So let's talk about you. You know, there's a lot going on in the world of pickleball. Some really new data. Some really new data. I guess that's probably a good way to. Some really cool new data is what I want to say. [00:03:13] Speaker B: And you love data. [00:03:14] Speaker A: I love stats and facts. So really new cool data came out. I gotta practice that sentence. I'm struggling with essence. Some really cool new. See, the problem is those adjectives. The order they go in is very important to you. It's not new cool data. It's cool new data. [00:03:31] Speaker B: There you go. [00:03:32] Speaker A: No, think. Think about it. Think Cinco de Miles in my head. You think about that for a minute, folks. I'm having breakfast with a friend of mine, pickleball player Holly, on Cinco de Mayo. And I just have breakfast tacos on my mind. What can I say? [00:03:47] Speaker B: Well, and we've cut back. [00:03:48] Speaker A: It's only two weeks away. [00:03:49] Speaker B: We've got back on calories so that we can be camera ready. [00:03:53] Speaker A: But if Coach D wasn't listening to this, I would tell you that I was saving calories for that day, but he would tell you that you cannot save calories ke. Okay, Coach D. Whatever you say, Coach D. We like Coach D. He is a good dude. [00:04:04] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:04:05] Speaker A: He is a part of my pickleball journey. And recently, I. I guess the best way to say it would be, I hired a coach. Coach D is going to get my butt in shape. [00:04:16] Speaker B: Yep. [00:04:18] Speaker A: That sucks. [00:04:20] Speaker B: I am all for it. I am part of his secret network. [00:04:24] Speaker A: Yeah, I know you're part of his secret spy network. [00:04:27] Speaker B: So I gave him all the details yesterday or two days ago, I'll be. [00:04:31] Speaker A: At pickleball, and Luke will be like, are you allowed to eat that? Are you allowed to eat that? [00:04:36] Speaker B: That was probably a loud laugh. Sorry, folks. [00:04:39] Speaker A: Yeah, Luke, I'm allowed to eat whatever I want. But here's the thing. Most of the time, if you make a bad decision, you will pay for it. [00:04:46] Speaker B: Yes. [00:04:47] Speaker A: So let's talk about pickleball. I think that's where we left off. [00:04:49] Speaker B: Which is also a spice in our life mentally. [00:04:53] Speaker A: Okay. It's a bit of a stretch, but. [00:04:55] Speaker B: Sure, I would call it. Let's add some spiciness to our life. [00:04:59] Speaker A: Okay. Do you want to get into that with our audio listeners here? [00:05:02] Speaker B: I don't know. [00:05:03] Speaker A: Probably not. [00:05:05] Speaker B: I don't think. I think. I'm thinking is the same as what you are thinking. [00:05:11] Speaker A: I do not know. [00:05:12] Speaker B: I'm thinking that our quality of life has improved. [00:05:16] Speaker A: See, I can get on board that train with what I'm thinking. Here's the thing. [00:05:21] Speaker B: It's a family friendly podcast. [00:05:23] Speaker A: It's family friendly, and we've been pretty friendly so far in our statements. We have not been unfriendly. [00:05:30] Speaker B: There's only been a few cuss words here and there that usually came from a guest speaker. [00:05:34] Speaker A: Yeah, let's move. [00:05:36] Speaker B: We have some guest speakers which we alluded to last podcast. [00:05:40] Speaker A: Yeah, Jefe. [00:05:42] Speaker B: Yep. [00:05:42] Speaker A: That's sticking on my single de mayo theme. [00:05:44] Speaker B: Yep. [00:05:45] Speaker A: He is coming in May 3rd. No, May. Nope. Hold on. That's not right. That's a Friday. So 104. May 7th. [00:05:53] Speaker B: Okay. [00:05:53] Speaker A: It'll be Wednesday, May 7th. And then we have chicken and pickle coming on. Yes. Did you get a hold of her? [00:05:58] Speaker B: We haven't discussed it yet, but she's on board. We just have to figure out. [00:06:02] Speaker A: Yeah, get that scheduled woman. Come on. All right. Anyway, the loving look I'm getting right now, so kind. [00:06:08] Speaker B: No, it's a good look. I'm happy. [00:06:10] Speaker A: Okay. What I want to talk about is the challenge we face as regular, everyday pickleball players. I think in a couple of different areas. [00:06:20] Speaker B: Is this going to be a happy topic or a sad topic? [00:06:24] Speaker A: Heavier. Heavy. I said heavier. [00:06:27] Speaker B: Okay. [00:06:28] Speaker A: Heavier than our normal. [00:06:30] Speaker B: Do tell. [00:06:31] Speaker A: There's some interesting things that are happening in pickleball that. That we've all seen coming and that we've just seen growing and in some places, festering, in other places, you know, fostering. But here's the thing. [00:06:44] Speaker B: I'm intrigued. [00:06:45] Speaker A: Yeah. I'm sure when we started playing, it was anybody you could find anywhere, anytime, any court, any four people. This is awesome. [00:06:56] Speaker B: Right? [00:06:58] Speaker A: I had somebody say to me the other day, you know, it just seems like everyone we play with now, like, it's all just our. Our group of our level competitors. [00:07:07] Speaker B: And we have talked about this in the past, because people who are beginners don't want to play with advanced players and possibly get a ball smashed at. [00:07:17] Speaker A: Them and vice versa. [00:07:19] Speaker B: Advanced players don't want to play with beginners because they don't get the same level of play. [00:07:23] Speaker A: But I've been watching because I was curious, like, is this really a true statement? And what I think we're just seeing is the natural progression of pickleball and more people are playing. And that's what I was saying about the stats coming out earlier. The stats that have come out tell us that there are now ready for this statistic, more pickleball players than tennis players in the United States of America. [00:07:45] Speaker B: Really? [00:07:46] Speaker A: That just came out. [00:07:47] Speaker B: I want to see that stat because I saw something different. [00:07:50] Speaker A: What you saw was wrong. [00:07:53] Speaker B: I saw that tennis has grown by 46% over the last. [00:07:57] Speaker A: Yeah, like six years or something. [00:07:58] Speaker B: Six years. And now, though the growth of pickleball is outpacing tennis players, there are still more tennis players. [00:08:06] Speaker A: I don't believe that's true. [00:08:08] Speaker B: Or they're still calling themselves tennis players. Tennis players. [00:08:11] Speaker A: The way the stat, as I understand it worked was this. If you look at what I would call a legitimate pickleball player or a legitimate tennis player, meaning somebody who plays more than once or twice a year. Okay, more pickleball players. [00:08:24] Speaker B: Okay. [00:08:25] Speaker A: Tennis is growing, but not anywhere near the rate pickleball's growing. [00:08:29] Speaker B: No. And there isn't a sport that's outpacing pickleball right now. [00:08:33] Speaker A: Yeah. And there are like 70,000 courts. 77,000. 55,000 courts. [00:08:39] Speaker B: I don't know that number. [00:08:40] Speaker A: It's literally like a thousand courts per state. [00:08:44] Speaker B: Wow. [00:08:45] Speaker A: Yeah. I started to think about that and I was like, well, I wonder how many we have here in Indiana. And it's not a thousand, but it's not that bad. You know, you go down to Indy and you've got 24, 7, which opened recently. Third Shot, which just opened. They have. Oh, gosh, I think it's 15 or 16 courts. 24. Seven is 22 picklers. One at 19, one at 13. So you got 32, 52, 67 ish courts right there among four places. But those are the biggest four places. And everything else. Indoor courts of indoor. [00:09:19] Speaker B: Well, outdoor course. There's other. [00:09:21] Speaker A: They're still the biggest four. I don't know of any outdoor places with 13 courts. [00:09:25] Speaker B: I feel like there was one recently added last year in Indiana by a parks and rec department. But I. I have to do some research. [00:09:31] Speaker A: Certainly could be, but I don't think we have four of them in the 15 plus range in the. In Indiana. [00:09:36] Speaker B: Probably not. [00:09:37] Speaker A: And why would we? The wind sucks. [00:09:39] Speaker B: The weather. [00:09:40] Speaker A: It has been horrible the last three to four weeks. The. The nets have been up, the lights are out, the doors are unlocked, and we can't go without getting abused by the wind. So we haven't been outside much this year. You and I went and shot a short video to show off some new paddles that'll be coming out soon. But yeah, that was with a lot of wind. [00:09:59] Speaker B: There was a lot of wind that day. Yep. [00:10:01] Speaker A: All right, so back to what I'm saying. So I've been watching, and I don't know that it's really a fair statement to say that everyone just now plays with their level. I think that if you think about Tuesday nights at bcc, it's still a bunch of people that just love to get together and play and have fun. And that's a pretty wide range of skill levels that are there. If you got to like a shady side, you know, when we can. Anything after 8, 30, 9 in the morning when sort of the top level players have done their early morning thing and the rest are just out there. It's all kinds of levels just out there having a good time. So I don't really think it's true that we're only playing in our own levels anymore. What I think is happening is we certainly are playing on our levels. And even way back when we were like, we identified the people we preferred to play with and they were usually better players. They weren't great back then. They were three O's instead of two fives or two Os. Right now they're just four zeros instead of three fives or three zeros. And soon there'll be five of us instead of four fives and four zeros. And I just. I just wanted to say that I don't think that that's actually a true statement any anymore. I felt like it maybe was, and I really paid attention to find out is this accurate or not. And a lot of places I've traveled to, and certainly here in our own town, I still see just a ton of fun pickup pickleball, which I think is a great and healthy thing. And I don't think the sport would be growing the level it's growing if that didn't exist at all. [00:11:20] Speaker B: No, I think. I think there is still. I mean, I agree with you. When we go out to places like we participated in a fun event yesterday or the day before and it was, you know, there were beginners because there were spouses there as well as, you know, the higher levels. But I still found that the higher levels were trying to still play with Each other. They weren't. They weren't saying hey to the beginner. Come play with us. [00:11:52] Speaker A: Mostly. That's correct. And this is going to surprise you, but because time flies. That was all the way back on Saturday night. [00:11:58] Speaker B: Yep. So I said a day or two ago. Yeah, yeah. [00:12:01] Speaker A: But it's been four days. [00:12:03] Speaker B: Oh, duh. [00:12:05] Speaker A: So time does fly when you're having fun. [00:12:07] Speaker B: Sure. [00:12:08] Speaker A: But even then, like, I think Tim Allersmont's a good example. We played with Tim and his lovely wife Brett, and we had a great time. [00:12:16] Speaker B: Absolutely. [00:12:16] Speaker A: And she's. Well, none of the three of us are his level, so, you know. [00:12:21] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. [00:12:22] Speaker A: It was a lot of fun. [00:12:23] Speaker B: It was fun. [00:12:24] Speaker A: I hit a few hard ones at him and he. [00:12:26] Speaker B: He was like, yeah. [00:12:27] Speaker A: He said, thanks for keeping me honest. He didn't hit any back at me because it was just a good practice session for him to do resets. But I ripped a couple of him just for fun. Got a couple points that way. It was kind of fun. [00:12:37] Speaker B: Was. [00:12:38] Speaker A: He's a good dude. So anyway, so that's. That's kind of one area I want to talk about. And again, I really. I believe it's such a community sport. I don't think it could grow. I think the stats bear witness to what I'm saying, which is that it still has that groundswell, ground level, people just partying together to play pickleball. And. And not solely or exclusively, just higher levels playing either with high levels. [00:13:04] Speaker B: I absolutely agree to that. [00:13:06] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:13:06] Speaker B: And because the projections for 2032 is still like, you know, billions of dollars. [00:13:14] Speaker A: We'Re going to Crush tennis by 2032. [00:13:16] Speaker B: 2032 is where they're projecting out so far. And right now, pickleball is like, right around a billion dollar business. By 2032, it's going to be like 10 billion. So that's a huge amount of growth. [00:13:30] Speaker A: Yeah. Get on board, people. I'm on board. Oh, it's time for a commercial. [00:13:34] Speaker B: Oh, did you forget? [00:13:37] Speaker A: No, I. I don't think so. I'm just gonna bring one in here. This episode brought to you by PB Time. PB Time tournaments. It's pickleball time, everybody. Okay, back to our regular podcast. [00:13:54] Speaker B: Getting good at that. [00:13:55] Speaker A: I've gotta practice it some more. I'm not used to doing commercials here, but when you get sponsors. [00:14:01] Speaker B: Yeah, let us know. [00:14:02] Speaker A: Wink, wink. No, like PB Time. [00:14:04] Speaker B: Oh, okay. I thought you were looking for more sponsors. [00:14:07] Speaker A: I mean, Disruptive is a sponsor. The Pod Pod Studio here at Energy Impact is a sponsor. [00:14:11] Speaker B: Yep. [00:14:12] Speaker A: In many ways, Energy Impact is a sponsor, of course. We just don't advertise them every time. But PB Time tournaments, friends, coming very soon. [00:14:22] Speaker B: Keep an A. Watch out. [00:14:24] Speaker A: To a theater, to a court near you. Not a theater, to a court near you. Okay, so that's just one area I wanted to discuss. Here's the other area that I think is worth discussing. [00:14:36] Speaker B: What's that? [00:14:37] Speaker A: It has to do with the rules again. Yeah, but I don't. This isn't about tricky rules or about. [00:14:43] Speaker B: And this is bad news for the Standard. [00:14:45] Speaker A: No, I don't. I never once said bad news. I said heavy hitting. I never said bad news. [00:14:49] Speaker B: To me, heavy means bad. [00:14:51] Speaker A: No, it means. Means hardcore, deeper, heavier. [00:14:54] Speaker B: Like meaty. [00:14:55] Speaker A: Meaty. [00:14:56] Speaker B: There you go. [00:14:57] Speaker A: Not just milk. We want some meat. [00:14:58] Speaker B: Okay. [00:14:59] Speaker A: Although chocolate milk sounds pretty good right now. [00:15:02] Speaker B: Coach D, you're just hungry. [00:15:03] Speaker A: I'm actually not. It's just. It's just the chocolate milk always sounds good. So true. It's the best drink ever. [00:15:13] Speaker B: You're getting off topic. [00:15:15] Speaker A: Well, maybe if. But if Hershey's wants to sponsor this podcast, we could certainly make a deal. [00:15:22] Speaker B: That's quick. [00:15:23] Speaker A: I think that the rules. Do you remember the first Batman that came out kind of in our era, if you will, with Jack Nicholson as. [00:15:35] Speaker B: Yes. [00:15:35] Speaker A: The Joker. [00:15:36] Speaker B: Yes. And he said Keaton was Batman. [00:15:39] Speaker A: Yes. And he said this town needs an enema. I think the rule book needs an enema. It needs a good cleaning up and cleaning up. [00:15:49] Speaker B: You think that about everything structurally. If it has to do with rules. [00:15:54] Speaker A: If it's not working. Right. [00:15:56] Speaker B: To you, rules are only there or only should be there if they make sense. [00:16:01] Speaker A: That is very much the point of a rule. [00:16:04] Speaker B: Right. But sometimes what makes sense to one person doesn't always make sense to another person. [00:16:08] Speaker A: I get that. And I'm not complaining about that. But I'll give you an example. [00:16:10] Speaker B: Please do. [00:16:11] Speaker A: You and I go out and we play against James and Robin. [00:16:13] Speaker B: Okay. [00:16:14] Speaker A: James throws the ball up and serves it overhead like a tennis. Like a tennis player. [00:16:17] Speaker B: Like you tried to do to Greg Anderson. Yep. [00:16:22] Speaker A: But he can't. But I can't call on him. [00:16:25] Speaker B: Because you're the opponent. [00:16:27] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:16:28] Speaker B: And it's rec play. [00:16:29] Speaker A: Rec play means nothing. That's just that this is the problem. I have the powers that be treat rec play and tournament play as if they're different games of pickleball. And they are not. [00:16:40] Speaker B: Right. We covered that before when we did the rules. [00:16:42] Speaker A: We did. And this is the point I'm getting at. It's becoming frustrating to players that they're in this little small box instead of this bigger box and they, and they have no leverage, they have no leeway, they have no ability to have a clean game. When some of these stupid rules are designed only for referees to be able to enforce, sure. Well, that's a problem. [00:17:08] Speaker B: And that's probably one of the reasons why advanced players don't like playing with beginners. Because nobody likes to be like, you're breaking the rules. [00:17:17] Speaker A: No, I don't think that's at all. I don't. I honestly think that advanced players are very kind to newer players and they like to teach them the rules. I think the issue is I don't have any authority anymore and it's not fair, but I can't do anything about it. No one wants to be in a situation where it's not fair to them and they can't respond. [00:17:32] Speaker B: Right. [00:17:33] Speaker A: I mean, there. Life isn't fair. I get that. But when you create a set of rules for a game in which you're trying to create equity in the game, literally the very first moment the game begins, is designed for equity in that you only get to serve once and then twice and twice and twice every time after that. Because it's designed for that equity. [00:17:50] Speaker B: Right. [00:17:51] Speaker A: And there is no equity in that situation. And listen, I know we talked about this before this, but this is where I'm going with this. [00:17:56] Speaker B: I'd like to know. [00:17:57] Speaker A: I believe it's time for a huge disruption in the rules process. [00:18:02] Speaker B: And how do you propose that? [00:18:03] Speaker A: Oh, I'll probably just start a company real quick that rebuilds the rules and puts them out there in about three weeks. [00:18:08] Speaker B: Okay. [00:18:09] Speaker A: No, but somebody should, somebody should grab the rule book, the 80 page PDF or whatever it is, shove it into chat GPT and go make this make sense for everybody. Make it easy. And give me a 10 page version of this. [00:18:23] Speaker B: Sure. [00:18:23] Speaker A: I think chat could probably pull that off for us. [00:18:26] Speaker B: I like how you tied the previous podcast together. [00:18:29] Speaker A: Thank you, AI. [00:18:30] Speaker B: We did AI last time. [00:18:32] Speaker A: Took a while to get there. [00:18:33] Speaker B: We did a rules update podcast earlier this year. [00:18:36] Speaker A: Correct. [00:18:37] Speaker B: And we've also said, steal my idea. [00:18:40] Speaker A: Exactly. See, it's all coming together. You're picking up on what I'm laying down. [00:18:44] Speaker B: Brilliant. [00:18:44] Speaker A: But about three minutes ago you're like, we already did that when he did that. And I was like, I'm just gonna fight through this with you. [00:18:49] Speaker B: I needed you to bring me down that path. Now I see it. [00:18:53] Speaker A: Hopefully our readers. Readers. [00:18:55] Speaker B: Why did you do that? [00:18:58] Speaker A: It's not a blog. [00:18:59] Speaker B: We're never Gonna make it to novice. If you can't get the terminology right. [00:19:03] Speaker A: I mean, whatever. Hopefully our listeners. I'll leave that in there because we don't mind our little flaws. Hopefully our listeners got there before you did. [00:19:11] Speaker B: But if not, in case not, you pulled them right there with you. [00:19:14] Speaker A: So thank you for that. [00:19:15] Speaker B: I like to review. [00:19:17] Speaker A: Exactly. So in some ways, I'm already really teasing next week's episode. [00:19:23] Speaker B: Interesting. [00:19:24] Speaker A: You like that? [00:19:25] Speaker B: I thought next week's episode is our anniversary. [00:19:27] Speaker A: Correct. Putting everything together. Yeah, I just thought I would have a little bit more time to get there. Not you calling me on the way over here from 15 minutes away. [00:19:37] Speaker B: I tend to think out loud. So, yes, it helped me to verbalize. [00:19:43] Speaker A: Sometimes, though, we can see the smoke. All right, so I do think it needs. I do think back to Batman. I think the rulebook needs an enema. And I know it's not a great visual per se. In fact, don't visualize that, my friends, but it is time. And on top of that. Well, no, I'll just leave it at that. You know, the usap, I don't know, every once in a while I think that they're potentially doing something better. And then I go, let's talk UTR for just a moment. Because again, in this whole of our industry, I much prefer to call it a sport. The whole of our sport, it's becoming an industry. But that's part of the problem, I think. But in the whole of our sport, you know, there's multiple players in the tournament space and in the software space and in the, you know, and in the rating space. Let's go to the rating side for a minute. So UTR P, which is the pickleball version of utr, has sent out an email to all of their utr. I will call them members, but people who have a rating. [00:20:52] Speaker B: Exactly. [00:20:53] Speaker A: Stating and not in these words. But I'm going to go ahead and use the words they should have used. Hey, our bad. Yeah, that's what they should have said. Hey, our bad. We should not have laid a whole different numbering system on top of you. We should have used the numbering system that everyone's been using for 50 years in pickleball. But no, we were stupid and didn't. And then, by the way, we were also stupid and we were big donkeys and you had to drag us really hard. And we kept fighting against you for the last two years. But finally we're gonna cave two years later than we should have and we're gonna go and re number you based on A more traditional numbering system. Yes, the one we all use. So I've been moved from a four point whatever to a 3.8. Okay, whatever, UTR. But it's a right direction move. [00:21:40] Speaker B: And you know what? It took some courage for them to do that. [00:21:42] Speaker A: No, you know what it took? It took a big hit to the wallet. I honest. And I know you work for them, so I don't mean any. [00:21:48] Speaker B: Well, I work. I'm a contractor. [00:21:49] Speaker A: I know, but UTR is who pays you, so sure you work for them and just keep your distance. Right now I'm busy talking about utr. I think they needed to get hit hard in the wallet book. Wallet book is a pocketbook combined with a wallet, in case you're wondering. It's one of the words I like, like dry sense, which is a driver's license. But anyway, they had to get hit hard in the wallet book in order for it to actually matter. [00:22:13] Speaker B: That's always true about a company though. [00:22:15] Speaker A: No, I know plenty of companies that go, wait, this might hurt us. Let's not do it. [00:22:20] Speaker B: Okay, sure, but it's about vision, profitability, customer retention. [00:22:26] Speaker A: Only about that. If you react instead of respond. Had they responded two years ago instead of reacting now, they wouldn't have gone through the last two years of hell trying to figure things out. [00:22:34] Speaker B: Well, I. I'm appreciative that they've reacted now and they didn't keep pushing. [00:22:38] Speaker A: Well, yeah, me too. But man, I just hate stupidity. And that's stupid if you ask me. [00:22:42] Speaker B: Well, it's. It's an interesting. What's the word? Confuche. [00:22:48] Speaker A: Conundrum. [00:22:49] Speaker B: Not conundrum. [00:22:50] Speaker A: Do they created a conundrum. [00:22:51] Speaker B: When two concepts come together can. What's the word? Confusion. Not confusion can cause confusion. Confluence. [00:23:00] Speaker A: Well, I was going to say consummation. Two objects are coming together. [00:23:05] Speaker B: You're making up words. Maybe I'll make up a word. Confluence. Maybe. Anyway, so my point is, UTR stands for Universal Tennis rating. [00:23:14] Speaker A: Right. [00:23:15] Speaker B: And they go up to. What is it, 15? [00:23:18] Speaker A: Who cares? [00:23:19] Speaker B: I'm just saying I'm giving some context here. [00:23:21] Speaker A: Sure. [00:23:22] Speaker B: So they go up to 15. They introduced pickleball rating, which is the UTRP. And they tried to follow the same logic, I guess, or algorithm for pickleball. It didn't work because so many of us are ingrained into duper. [00:23:42] Speaker A: No, not duper. Duper didn't create the numbering system. [00:23:46] Speaker B: Who created the numbering system before? [00:23:47] Speaker A: This was the utpr. [00:23:51] Speaker B: Utpr? [00:23:52] Speaker A: Yeah, you. You. It was utpr. Whatever USAP had and. [00:24:01] Speaker B: Okay, so USAP had a rating system called something. [00:24:04] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:24:04] Speaker B: And they're the creators. Okay, great. [00:24:06] Speaker A: I'm not even sure they're the creators. I'm simply saying the idea of a 1.020-3040 5.0, that's been around for decades. [00:24:14] Speaker B: That's great to have that history. [00:24:15] Speaker A: Duper didn't create it three or four years ago. [00:24:17] Speaker B: Okay. Anyway, Duper ran with it. [00:24:20] Speaker A: That's the point I've been making. [00:24:21] Speaker B: Right? [00:24:21] Speaker A: No, Duper didn't even run with it. Duper said, we think your version sucks. [00:24:25] Speaker B: So we created our own algorithm. [00:24:28] Speaker A: Yeah, but same numbering system. [00:24:31] Speaker B: Okay. [00:24:31] Speaker A: If you think you're a 3.0, let's make. We'll decide if you're 3.0. [00:24:35] Speaker B: So they kept the same numbers. Yeah, but they made it better in their. In there. [00:24:39] Speaker A: They think they did. And they probably did, in all honesty. [00:24:43] Speaker B: And then here comes utr, who said. [00:24:47] Speaker A: We don't even like your numbering system. We're going to make our own. [00:24:49] Speaker B: Right. Which caused a great amount of confusion. [00:24:53] Speaker A: Only for utr, because none of the rest of us care. How many people do you know that actually know their UTR rating? [00:24:59] Speaker B: Only about 2 or 3. [00:25:01] Speaker A: Correct. I know 500. That another duper rating, Right? Yeah. [00:25:07] Speaker B: You probably know more than that based on how many. [00:25:09] Speaker A: I know 450 that were my last tournament that know their Duper rating. [00:25:12] Speaker B: Right. So where are we going with this? [00:25:16] Speaker A: Well, as you know, I love disruption. When it's necessary, it's still necessary. [00:25:22] Speaker B: Sure. [00:25:22] Speaker A: So not only does the rule system need an enema, I believe that the rating system needs. It still needs an enema. No one's given it a good one yet. Not a good cleaning yet. So those two. And quite honestly, USAP probably still needs one. [00:25:42] Speaker B: Okay. [00:25:43] Speaker A: Yeah. We're not anywhere near where we're going to be at in five years from this, folks. It's going to be a crazy next five years in pickleball. [00:25:50] Speaker B: Well, it's kind of like the Wild west right now. Everybody is trying to lay claim. [00:25:53] Speaker A: That was our acronym episode. [00:25:56] Speaker B: Exactly. [00:25:56] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:25:56] Speaker B: Everyone's trying to lay claim to their territory and get their land. A land grab. [00:26:03] Speaker A: You're the one that says can be a $10 billion industry in seven years. So why wouldn't everybody go for it? [00:26:07] Speaker B: I didn't say that. That was a study done. And you could find that in Google, so it's easy to find online. Yeah, I'm just repeating it. [00:26:16] Speaker A: Yeah, I concur. [00:26:19] Speaker B: Well, good to know. Is that the only thing that's on your heart. I know you like to disrupt industry, and the nice thing about people like you is it does prompt necessary change. [00:26:34] Speaker A: I don't know if I do it or not. [00:26:35] Speaker B: You can't fix a problem unless you know about it. [00:26:38] Speaker A: Yeah, there's some truth to that. [00:26:40] Speaker B: A lot of sheetzet. [00:26:41] Speaker A: Yeah, that's for sure. [00:26:42] Speaker B: All right. [00:26:43] Speaker A: Well, my love, I feel like we're at a really good stopping point for this week. I think we should be saying things like, tell your friends that we're ahead of the game and so are.
